The materialisation of a child’s hand:

A séance is an experience in itself, as an investigation it is an intriguing way of noting odd and unexplained physical activity which occurs during a set period of time.  This last investigation into spirit presence was something to be discussed, a cause for shock and intrigue amongst the members of the investigation and something which I personally am still trying to explain.

The séance is an important platform for observing any unexplained activities.  It is as an investigation that the séance is held and therefore a number of checks are put into place prior to the séance itself.  The room is cleaned of anything apart from the identified numbered objects used in the séance.  The door is kept closed all during the investigation and as there is a red light used, members who are seated in a circular shape around one another can view each other.  The door and the window is kept locked so as that nothing is allowed in or out of the room while the séance is in process.  No one will get up from their seats, everyone will observe what is occurring in the séance in front of them and only trusted members are allowed to sit in a physical séance.

This séance was one which personally stood out for me, it was an experience of which I had never been allowed such a shockingly life like unexplained incident of claimed spirit materialisation.  It was the séance in which I noted something in front of me, only a few centimetres from my face, it lasted a full four to five minutes, it was clear and it had me watching it closely for the whole time it was visible.  A child’s hand, was the materialisation and it was pure white at first, in fact it looked as if a white mist was forming in a line until after a two to three minute period the fingers uncurled from what was a very small palm.  The little hand was fully formed.  It opened out to show small fingers which in turn each moved slightly, answering my own question on what the hand was and what it was capable of doing.  The hand was pale at first and as it unfurled so too the colour seemed to grow into that of something which resembled what would have been a person’s colouring exactly.  The sizing was small and was what I would have said as belonging to that of an infant.

The séance was taken aback at what was being noted.  The hand was a notable materialisation and in the four minutes it was visible I could not watch anything else apart  from its shape, how it seemed to wriggle its little fingers out as if trying to see what it could do itself and then how it grew less and less clear until it was not visible in the séance at all.  I had to note everything, all evidence up until that point of noting the materialisation of the hand, and all incidents after as it was with all of this information that it was thought an answer may be made apparent as to how the materialisation came to be.

The séance had started out with the opening to spirit being said by one of the physical mediums, an address if you like put out to spirit asking for any kind of response in activity which could be noted by everyone in the investigation, and it was a few minutes into the actual séance that a lot of blue lights were claimed by the sitters.  These blue lights were small at first but there were a few of the members who stated they had noted larger blue disks of light in one area of the room.  The red light lit up the séance only enough so as members could see one another and the door of the room.  The area with the blue lights was pointed out again a little later but one of the members who referred to seeing something there, it was a white light.  Without anyone else having seen this, the séance continued and then the medium started to refer to a name of Harriet, Harriet she said and then this lady was someone who in life had tried to fight against public opinions, she was strong in her convictions, she knew that people had to fight for what they knew was right and she had achieved a lot through her writings on the subject.  This was all information which was noted but it was not something that everyone could verify, it was interesting that it was as this information was being referenced that the blue lights were claimed again by the sitters who were listening to the medium.  The blue lights, although I saw three, were small and they did seem to stay in one place but there was one which did stray a little and looked to go in a different direction to the others.  Then, the séance went quiet, nothing seemed to occur until the medium claimed that the spirit of two little girls were present.  This was seen by the medium and several of the sitters.  The claims of the temperature becoming cooler started at this point and it was in this few minutes that the name of H and Harriet was stated again.  With the room actually so cold that I had started to sense the hair standing up on my arm, voices started and this was noted a little apart from where the sitters sat and from a part of the séance where no one was physically sat.

The medium mentioned the lady was stepping forward and with her was another man Frederick.  The man she said was black and was keen to be noted in the séance.  The information went on to talk of the lady’s appearance with her hair tied up and her dress quite ornate.  The lady was noted by the medium as someone who loved her home land and was keen to talk of her friends, her penmanship was remarked upon by her and her allegiance to her country’s faith of spirit.  It is after research that it is thought that the Harriet refers to that of Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 – July 1, 1896).  Harriet Stowe of whom was talked of in the séance was an American abolitionist and author.  It was her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) which was a depiction of life for African Americans under the slavery of the period; it reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and also the United Kingdom.  In the séance the spirit talked through the medium of her books, she said that religion was not to be only talked of in small societies but to be congregated into national discussions.  Questions into the condition of the human spirit is the greater good for all, not one individual and should not be at the meagre division of race, ethnicity, creed or colour.  Life is to be lived with all, not pitted against one for colour or prejudice.  These words are written as they were spoken of in the séance, it was that Harriet Beecher Stowe in life wrote a book which energized anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South and she wrote more than 20 books, including her novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters.  In life research shows Harriet Beecher Stowe as influential for both her writings and her public stands on social issues of the day.

The materialisation of the child’s hand.  It was after the medium had finished speaking that I found myself looking at one of the sitter’s chairs to the right.  While she was sitting and looking at the séance in process I noted that her coat which was hung up behind her chair had an odd white mist coming out of the sleeve.  The mist caught my attention as it looked like smoke coming out of that arm and I looked again to be sure that nothing was caught on fire in the coat.  The smoke itself was only very slowly coming out of the sleeve and after this I watched it for a few minutes as it did start to appear misty and then within the four minutes the little hand slowly started to form.  The materialisation was of interest but while it was astonishingly noted in the séance as having occurred, there was nothing to ascertain who the hand belonged to, the only information the medium could say was she thought it was that of a little boy but she had no name or other information at that time.  It was in researching the name of Harriet Beecher Stowe that it was found that on 12 January 1848 Samuel Charles Stowe, her little boy, passed away.  It is unsubstantiated but it is thought that the materialised hand belonged to the little boy Samuel Charles Stowe who was so closely related to that of Harriet and whose age of infancy does equate with that of the size of the hand which was seen.

The date of the 20th was claimed by spirit as important as was the name Catherine, it was the date of when the sitting sat, and it was in research found that Harriet Beecher Stowe had her American Women’s Home published 20 February 1869 and co-authored this with Catharine Beecher, the sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Interesting photographic finding:  Harriet Beecher Stowe also did much more research into writing her book, even contacting Frederick Douglass to ask to be put in touch with ex-slaves who could ensure the accuracy of her story, it is thought this Frederick was the man seen by the medium standing with Harriet but there was also another unidentified man of whom the medium spoke but who could not be depicted in that of the research that is until the photograph at the bottom of this blog was picked out and referenced as exactly the man who had been noted in spirit as being in the séance.

Harriet Beecher Stowe was the name the medium claimed several times in the séance, she stated that the lady was keen again to talk to the séance.  She loved her children, her gardens, she talked of the beautiful gardens a lot and then of the name of gardens in England, the walks in England, the name Frederick, Victoria, Byron and Charles.  It was that in life Harriet Beecher Stowe returned to Europe in 1856, meeting Queen Victoria and befriending the widow of that of the poet Lord Byron.  Harriet Beecher Stowe also met with Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and George Eliot.  It is an interesting link that all the names the spirit referenced in talking came up in the researching of the events of her life.

Frederick was the other name which was linked into what was said by the spirit in the séance and while one was known and agreed to be that of Frederick Douglass but Stowe also had a son Frederick who was lost at sea in 1871, and Harriet Beecher Stowe mourned another son lost to death.  She had daughters Eliza and Harriet, the twins, who are believed to be that of the two little girls seen near the beginning of the séance by the medium and some of the sitters prior to the difference noted in temperature of the séance.

Images of a bed were noted in the séance around Harriet, and it was in research later found out that Harriet Beecher Stowe was bed ridden for a lot of her latter stages in life.  It was a minor and somewhat personal point of reference but it was verified.

On finishing the séance the evidence was investigated.  Sitters talked of the blue lights they had seen, the temp difference, the voices which were heard but far more referenced was the materialisation which had been noted.  The sitter’s coat had been checked before the séance as is done with all member’s items of clothing which is to remain with them in the séance.  After the séance once more the same coat from which the child’s hand was seen to protrude and then disappear was checked again but absolutely nothing could be found in it, on it or around it to explain what was seen in the séance.

Photograph is taken from online research.  The man who has been picked out as the spirit seen is on the far right.  It is interesting to have a photographic image of someone who was talked of and referenced in the actual séance.  It is also interesting to me that the online title of this photograph is referred to with the word App Garden, garden being a word which was repeatedly spoken of by the spirit of Harriet Beecher Stowe in the séance when she was referring to her visit to the United Kingdom.
